Leveling Alchemy from 1 to 300 in WoW Forever takes about 350 crafts, and the trainer sells almost every recipe you need on the way. Up to 75, the elixirs you get with the profession are all you need. After that come fish oils, Swim Speed Potion, and Elixir of Fire Power, and from 175 the new Discolored Healing Potions carry almost half the climb, including the last stretch from 264 to 300. The big change from Classic is that regular healing potions are made with First Aid now, and alchemists get their own line instead. It heals for more, but there's a catch. The step-by-step route with materials is right here, along with what to craft for sale, where to train ranks, the new recipes, and the mistakes that cost people gold.
Why Alchemy is worth it in WoW Forever
An alchemist makes what everybody needs: mana potions while leveling, elixirs before a dungeon, flasks for raids. Consumables get used up, so the demand lasts the whole game, not just the first week after launch.
In Forever the profession pays off long before 60, because Blizzard added more than 50 new recipes and a lot of them are low level.
Minor Mender's Potion adds healing power for half a minute,
Minor Spellblasting Potion adds spell damage,
Minor Frenzy Potion adds attack power, and the low-level Cleric's and Mageblood elixirs last 30 minutes each. You'll want these yourself as early as your first dungeons.
Alchemy almost always goes with Herbalism. Alchemy eats herbs by the hundred, and picking your own makes leveling far cheaper. Fishing pays off too. Midway through, the route needs more than 130 fish for oils, and Fishing doesn't take up a primary profession slot.
What changed in Forever Alchemy
- Regular healing potions belong to First Aid now. The whole line, from Minor to Major Healing Potion, left Alchemy, and alchemists got Discolored Healing Potions instead. How they work and where to learn them is covered below, and how the regular ones are made now is in the First Aid guide.
- More than 50 new recipes. Some drop from mobs, but most are sold for Merchant's Favor at the trading company camp. The Merchant's Favor guide has the details.
- Camp items. At skill 20, the quest Camping 101: Alchemy teaches you to make a
Mana Well. Set it up by a campfire and everyone sitting nearby gets their mana back faster. Later you unlock the
Fermenter (skill 140) and the
Alchemy Laboratory (skill 300), and some recipes can only be made next to them: oils and dyes at the Fermenter, flasks at the Laboratory. - Transmutes. In Forever,
Transmute: Iron to Gold and
Transmute: Mithril to Truesilver only have a one-hour cooldown, not a day or two like in Classic. Every transmute needs a
Philosopher's Stone. - Legacy. You earn a Legacy point the first time you reach 150, 225, and 300, and the
Working Overtime perk in the professions branch adds up to 20% to your skill-up chance. You can set its rank in the profession calculator.
Alchemy leveling route 1-300
The route is built from the beta client data. Each step uses the recipe that raises your skill the cheapest, but it skips green recipes once your chance of a point drops below half. Craft counts are averages. While a recipe is yellow you get a point almost every time, but as it nears green you might need a couple of extra crafts, so buy a few spare materials.
You don't need to buy anything from the trainer until 75.
Minor Arcane Elixir and
Elixir of Minor Defense come with the profession, and they use
Peacebloom,
Silverleaf, and
Empty Vial. Fish come in at 80:
Blackmouth Oil takes
Oily Blackmouth, the same oil later goes into
Swim Speed Potion, and
Fire Oil takes
Firefin Snapper. Discolored Healing Potions carry you from 91 to 100, from 175 to 196, and from 264 to the end, and every one of them needs a
Murloc Eye.
If you're missing a recipe or want to price the route for your realm, open it in the calculator. You can start from your current skill, take a recipe out, and pick the cheapest or the fastest path.

How to make gold with Alchemy in WoW Forever
The route above raises your skill fast and cheap, but it earns almost nothing. Nobody wants the leveling elixirs, and their recipes go gray quickly. If you want Alchemy to pay for itself, craft something else. Here's what will definitely sell in Forever, and why.
You won't find exact prices here, and we're not adding any. The beta was capped at level 30, so nobody has seen real level 60 prices yet, and after launch your realm's Auction House will show them. Before you brew a batch to sell, compare the price of the finished potion with the price of the herbs that go into it.
While leveling: dyes, acid, and potions
Only alchemists can make it, and 131 recipes in other professions call for it. Most of it goes to tailors for bags, from the Woolen Reagent Bag up to Mooncloth bags. On the beta it sold for about 3 gold, but that is close to the price of the two lichens it is made from. The profit goes to whoever gathers their own
Frilled Lichen.
Another reagent only alchemists make: 45 Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Enchanting and Engineering recipes call for the acid. It takes
Pyrite, which miners do not find often, so it pays best if you mine yourself or have a miner friend.
A dye used in 65 recipes, mostly Tailoring, including Runecloth bags. It is made from the herb
Rosecap, so once again the biggest winner is whoever gathers their own.
Fifteen seconds of running 50% faster, which can decide a fight on a battleground. On the beta it sold for about 60 silver.
Recipe: Swiftness Potion drops from mobs, can be fished up and can be pickpocketed, but trainers do not sell it.
Healing potions are now made with First Aid, so anyone can make them, but mana potions are still alchemist-only. Mages, priests, warlocks and every healer will drink them from the first dungeon to raids. At level 60 the big sellers are
Superior Mana Potion from skill 260 and
Major Mana Potion from 295.
Transmutes
Every transmute needs a
Philosopher's Stone. The recipe is sold from skill 225, and the stone isn't used up, but you can't sell it either. Keep in mind that Arcanite, Legionite, and the essence transmutes share one cooldown, so every two days you only get to pick one of them.
89 Blacksmithing and Engineering recipes call for Arcanite, including the best weapons. The transmute has a 47-hour cooldown and needs
Thorium Bar and
Arcane Crystal. The recipe is sold in Tanaris.
A new Forever metal required by 22 new level-60 Blacksmithing and Engineering recipes. The transmute needs
Heavy Thorium Bar and
Fel Crystal, and it also has a 47-hour cooldown. Where to get the recipe is still unknown, and miners can only smelt Heavy Thorium Bars at a camp smelter whose blueprint nobody has found yet either.
In Forever these transmutes have only a one-hour cooldown, but do not expect much from them. Miners smelt these bars anyway, and when every alchemist can make them once an hour, the market will be flooded fast. Think of them as a way to use up spare iron and mithril, not a main income.
For the December 9 raids
Three raids open on December 9: the 10-player Barrow Deeps, the 20-player Hyjal Summit, and the 40-player Onyxia's Lair. Raiders buy consumables every week, and that's the steadiest money an alchemist has at 60.
Blizzard states plainly that you need fire protection for Onyxia. In Forever the potion's shield lasts only 2 minutes instead of an hour, so you cannot drink it early and forget about it. The potion needs
Elemental Fire, which you can get by transmuting at skill 300.
New in Forever:
Flask of Natural Accuracy,
Flask of Natural Aggression,
Flask of Natural Precision and
Flask of Natural Swiftness. On top of 60 Stamina, each adds its own bonus: hit, critical strike, reduced chance to be dodged or parried, or haste. They only work on Mount Hyjal, in the Barrow Deeps and in Hyjal Summit - two of the three raids. They are brewed at an Alchemy Laboratory and need
Death Lotus. Where the recipes come from is still unknown.
Flask of the Titans adds 1200 health for 2 hours, while casters take
Flask of Distilled Wisdom and
Flask of Supreme Power. Every flask needs
Black Lotus and can only be brewed at an Alchemy Laboratory, and each craft makes just one. Expensive, but raiders buy them.
The go-to Agility elixir for physical damage dealers. In Forever it lasts 30 minutes instead of an hour, so a raid needs twice as many as in Classic.
Where to train Alchemy and its ranks
Every Alchemy trainer in the capitals and starting towns teaches Apprentice (up to 75), but after that your options narrow. Journeyman unlocks at skill 50 and character level 10, Expert at skill 125 and level 20, and Artisan at skill 200 and level 35. The level requirements are low, so it's easy to level Alchemy alongside your character instead of saving it for 60. If your character falls behind, your skill just waits at the rank cap.
| Rank | Skill and level | Cost | Alliance | Horde and neutral |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice, up to 75 | From the start | 10c | Alchemist Mallory in Goldshire, Tel'Athir in Stormwind, Vosur Brakthel in Ironforge, Milla Fairancora in Darnassus | Whuut in Orgrimmar, Carolai Anise in Brill, Miao'zan in Sen'jin Village, Kray in Thunder Bluff |

Discolored Healing Potions: where to learn them and why
Discolored Healing Potions are the big new thing in Forever Alchemy. Take the mid-tier
Discolored Healing Potion. It heals 600-680 instantly, and then you lose 75% of what it healed, because that damage comes back as a poison over 6 seconds or a disease over 12. Sounds weird, but in a fight, getting your health up right now matters most, and the poison or disease can be cleansed if someone in your group can do that. They're on a 2-minute cooldown, like regular healing potions.
The usual trainers don't teach these. Your first teacher is the Odd Child, in a barn at Moonbrook in Westfall, who starts you off with two easy quests: My First Alchemy Set asks for 5 Empty Vials, 5 Silverleaf, and 5 Peacebloom, and My First Real Potion asks for 3 Murloc Eyes. After that, the Odd Child teaches the rest of the line for gold, like a normal trainer. Horde players have something closer, since Apothecary Renferrel at the Sepulcher in Silverpine Forest teaches the same recipes.
Every potion in the line needs a
Murloc Eye, so start saving Murloc Eyes while you level instead of buying them on the Auction House later.

New recipes: Merchant's Favor and drops
Forever's new recipes come from two places. The early ones drop from mobs. The Minor Mender's, Spellblasting, and Frenzy Potions and the low-level Spirit, Mageblood, and Cleric's elixirs drop as early as the starting zones, and the next tier of Mender's, Spellblasting, and Frenzy Potions drops from level 20-30 mobs.
Most of the rest are sold by Nina Surefire at the Alliance camp in Redridge Mountains and by Apothecary Durelle at the Horde camp in the Barrens. You pay in Merchant's Favor. Simple recipes cost 45 Favor, and the stronger ones cost 120 and 180-240 and need Friendly and Honored with the trading company. How to build up Favor and reputation is in the Merchant's Favor guide.
You barely need these recipes for leveling, since most of them only give about 10 points before going gray. Get them for the potions and elixirs themselves, and level your skill with the route above. By default, the calculator only falls back on recipes you learn from items when there's no other option.
Herbs, fish, and vials you'll need
Almost every Alchemy recipe needs a vial. The regular ones (
Empty Vial,
Leaded Vial, and
Crystal Vial) are sold by nearly every trade goods vendor, plus alchemy and herbalism suppliers.
Imbued Vial is only sold by alchemy and herbalism suppliers, usually near the trainers. Vendors sell vials in stacks of 5, so buy enough for the whole stretch in one go.
Early on the route uses the most
Peacebloom and
Silverleaf, then
Kingsblood,
Wild Steelbloom, and
Goldthorn, and
Arthas' Tears and
Plaguebloom near 300. You can catch the fish (
Oily Blackmouth and
Firefin Snapper) yourself or buy them, and
Murloc Eye drops from murlocs. The exact amounts for your stretch are in the list under the route.
We don't list herb prices. There are none before launch, and afterward they'll change every day. The general rule: herbs from the start of the route grow in every starting zone, every herbalist picks them, and they usually cost next to nothing. The exception is the first few days after launch, when everyone's leveling professions at once. The higher the skill, the rarer and pricier the herb, especially while there are few high-level herbalists around.
Common mistakes
- Crafting green recipes until they go gray. The last points on a green recipe take several times more crafts than on a yellow one. As soon as a recipe turns green, check whether the next one is ready.
- Forgetting about ranks. At 75, 150, and 225 your skill hits the cap, and the next rank needs a character level: 10 for Journeyman, 20 for Expert, and 35 for Artisan.
- Leveling with transmutes. Transmutes have cooldowns from an hour to two days, so they're useless for leveling. They're for money, not skill points.
- Selling your Murloc Eyes. Discolored potions use one per craft, and the route needs about 80 of them.
- Buying everything the trainer has. Half the recipes on the trainer's list aren't needed for leveling. Learn what the route uses, and the rest when you actually need those potions.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to level Alchemy to 300 in WoW Forever?
Our route takes about 350 crafts. Training, ranks included, costs about 8.5 gold, and 5 of that is Artisan alone. Vials from the vendor add about 4.4 gold more. The rest is herbs, and your realm's Auction House decides that part, so enter their prices in the calculator and it'll add up the total. If you gather your own herbs, you're only paying for vials and training.
At what level can you get Alchemy to 300?
You can take it to 75 right away. Journeyman needs character level 10, Expert 20, and Artisan 35, so you can have Alchemy at 300 as early as level 35.
Why can't alchemists make regular healing potions in Forever?
They moved to First Aid, so any character can make healing potions now. Alchemists brew Discolored Healing Potions instead. They heal for more, but 75% of the healing comes back as poison or disease damage.
Where do you learn Discolored Healing Potions?
From the Odd Child in a barn at Moonbrook in Westfall, after two simple quests, or from Apothecary Renferrel at the Sepulcher in Silverpine Forest. Neither is a regular Alchemy trainer, and you won't find these recipes in any city.
What profession should you pair with Alchemy?
Herbalism. Almost every Alchemy recipe uses herbs, and gathering your own makes leveling a lot cheaper. Of the secondary professions, Fishing helps, since the route uses more than 130 fish for oils.
Can you level Alchemy with transmutes?
Transmute cooldowns run from one hour (Iron to Gold, Mithril to Truesilver) to almost two days (Arcanite), so they're no use for raising your skill. There's money in them, but mostly in Arcanite and the new Legionite. Any alchemist at 225 can turn iron into gold and mithril into truesilver once an hour, so those bars won't be worth much.
How do you make gold with Alchemy in WoW Forever?
From skill 25, mana potions. Healing potions come from First Aid now, but mana potions are still alchemist-only. At 40, add Cerulean Dye and Sulfuric Acid, which only alchemists make too, and tailors, blacksmiths, and leatherworkers need them. At 60, it's Arcanite, Legionite, and raid consumables: Greater Fire Protection Potions for Onyxia, flasks, and Elixir of the Mongoose.
