WoW Forever Herbalism leveling guide 1-300: where to gather, trainers, and gold

Updated 29 October 2026 · 20 min read · based on beta 1.60.1 and official news

You level Herbalism in WoW Forever from 1 to 300 with no recipes and at almost no cost, since your skill goes up with every herb you pick until that herb turns gray. So leveling comes down to which zone you gather in. You can train right in your starting valley with a junior trainer, or take the Wild Harvest book from one of your first quests. New in Forever are the candle, greenhouse, and seed hybridizer for your camp, herb seeds, and scarce materials like Frilled Lichen, which alchemists turn into dye for tailoring bags. Here you'll find the leveling plan by skill range, the thresholds for every herb, where to train, and which herbs alchemists, First Aid, blacksmiths, and raiders need.

Why Herbalism is worth taking in WoW Forever

Herbalism is a primary profession, so it takes one of your two slots. But apart from training it costs nothing. Herbalists don't need a tool, and all four ranks cost less than six gold at the trainers. Herbs grow in almost every zone, and the profession levels itself while you run around questing. Icy Veins says gathering ranks in Forever need a lower character level than crafting ones, exactly so you can gather while leveling.

Herbalists have more customers in Forever than in Classic. Alchemy recipes are still almost all herbs, but now First Aid needs herbs too, since regular healing potions moved over to it. Blacksmiths put Purple Lotus into the new Sentinel's armor, cooks make new teas from herbs, and regular herbs sometimes drop Frilled Lichen, which alchemists turn into dye for bags. You'll be handy to your group too, because an Incense Candle at the campfire gives Intellect, like the mage spell.

Herbalism is most often paired with Mining, since you gather herbs and ore along the same path. Just keep in mind that the minimap can only track one at a time, so you'll have to switch by hand. The other good pairing is Alchemy. Almost all its recipes are herbs, so your own herbs make leveling a lot cheaper, and you can turn the extras into potions to sell. Wowhead says gathering is especially easy on druids, since Travel Form and Prowl make it simple to dodge fights you don't need.

What changed in Forever Herbalism

  • Junior trainers and the Wild Harvest book. Six starting valleys have Junior Herbalism Trainers, who only teach Apprentice, for 10 copper. And one of the first quests, at about level 3-4, lets you pick one of three books. Wild Harvest teaches Herbalism right away if you have fewer than two primary professions and raises your skill by 2, but not above 15.
  • Candle, greenhouse, and hybridizer for your camp. Herbalists put down their own camp items at the campfire now, thanks to Gardening, an ability that comes with the profession. From skill 20 the candle gives Intellect to everyone sitting nearby, and the greenhouse and the hybridizer grow and improve herb seeds. There's more in the camp section.
  • Herb seeds. Gathering sometimes gives seeds of four kinds: Commonplace Herb Seeds, Uncommon Herb Seeds, Unusual Herb Seeds, and Scarce Herb Seeds. You plant them in a greenhouse or combine them in a hybridizer, but nobody knows yet what grows from them.
  • Scarce materials. Regular herbs sometimes drop materials that have no nodes of their own: Frilled Lichen, Rosecap, and Stranglevine. Only alchemists make dyes from them, and hundreds of recipes in other professions call for those dyes. There's more in the gold section.
  • New herbs for skill 300 recipes. Forever's data has three new herbs: Demonsage, Marefoil, and Death Lotus. Wowhead doesn't know yet where they grow or what skill they need. The one thing we do know is that Enchant Gloves - Lotus Claw gives a small chance to find Death Lotus when you pick any herb on Mount Hyjal.
  • Tauren Cultivation. Cultivation doesn't add Herbalism skill anymore. Instead it grows a copy of the plant nearby that anyone can pick, even without the profession. There's more in the skill bonus section.
  • Herb bags got bigger. The Cenarion Herb Bag has 26 slots now instead of 20, and the Satchel of Cenarius has 32 instead of 24. For starters, vendors sell the new 4-slot Apprentice's Herb Pouch.
  • Legacy. Wowhead doesn't show any Legacy challenges for Herbalism, but you get a Legacy point the first time you reach 150, 225, and 300. The Bountiful Harvest perk raises your scarce material yield by 20% per rank, up to 100% at rank five, Working Overtime raises the skill-up chance for any profession, and Dedicated Study adds a point to your lowest profession once every 23 hours.

Leveling Herbalism 1-300: where to gather

Herbalists have no recipes to level with, so there's no crafting route either. Your skill goes up with the herbs you pick. While an herb is orange, every pick gives a point, yellow almost always does, green a lot less often, and gray never. So once a zone's main herbs turn green, it's time to move to where the next ones grow.

Don't forget your ranks. Journeyman is taught from skill 50, Expert from 125, and Artisan from 200. According to Icy Veins, Expert also needs character level 10 and Artisan level 25, which is a lot earlier than for crafting professions. If you haven't trained the rank, your skill stops at 75, 150, or 225, and herbs stop giving points.

The ranges up to 225 come from Wowhead's Forever herbalism overview, and past that we extended them using the herb thresholds from the same overview. Where each herb grows is in the herb table.

Making gold with Herbalism in WoW Forever

Herbalism costs almost nothing, so every herb you sell is pure income. Not everything is valuable, though. The best sellers are what other professions level with or turn into raid consumables. Here are the herbs and materials that will definitely sell in Forever, and why.

You won't find prices here. The beta was capped at level 30, so nobody has seen real level 60 prices yet, and after launch your realm's Auction House will show them. The only hard numbers are the Black Market vendor's prices, which are at the end of this section.

Herbs other professions level with

In the first weeks after launch everyone levels professions at once, and herbs from the start of the routes are the first to go up in price. The numbers below show how many herbs our leveling routes use, which is how many anyone leveling a profession from scratch without gathering will buy.

Peacebloom and SilverleafFrom skill 1

The Alchemy route uses 91 Peacebloom and 72 Silverleaf, and the First Aid route another 84 Peacebloom for Minor Healing Potion. Since these are starting-zone herbs, they fetch the most in the first days, while everyone is leveling professions at once.

BruiseweedFrom skill 100

First Aid uses it for Healing Potion, and its route takes 48. Healing potions moved to First Aid in Forever, and any character can take it, so Bruiseweed has plenty of buyers. Alchemists need it too: Discolored Healing Potion depends on it.

KingsbloodFrom skill 125

The Alchemy route uses 46: for Elixir of Fire Power and the discolored healing potions. Leatherworkers also need 4 per pair of Herbalist's Gloves, and enchanters need it for Enchant Gloves - Herbalism. Both the gloves and the enchant add Herbalism skill, so herbalists themselves buy them.

Wild Steelbloom and GoldthornFrom skill 115 and 170

The Alchemy route takes 38 of each for Elixir of Defense. Cooks need Goldthorn as well: Goldthorn Tea takes one herb, and the tea adds 15 Herbalism skill for 15 minutes.

Arthas' Tears and PlaguebloomFrom skill 220 and 285

Alchemists use them for their last 70 skill points: 41 Arthas' Tears go into Draught of Detect Undead, 38 Plaguebloom into Major Discolored Healing Potion. Elixir of the Mongoose, the go-to Agility elixir for physical damage dealers, also takes two Plaguebloom.

Purple Lotus and WildvineFrom skill 210

Purple Lotus goes into eight new Sentinel's armor recipes for blacksmiths, 2 to 10 per item, and blacksmiths learn the Sentinel's Belt recipe from the trainer as early as skill 150. The Cenarion Herb Bag for tailors takes another 10 lotuses. Wildvine drops as a bonus from Purple Lotus: the Enchanting route takes 23 for Enchant Gloves - Minor Haste, and it also appears in leatherworking, tailoring and engineering recipes.

Scarce materials: lichen, rosecap and stranglevine

These materials have no nodes of their own and drop as a bonus from regular herbs. Alchemists are the main buyers, since only they make dyes from them, and those dyes go to tailors for bags and clothing, and to enchanters and leatherworkers too. The Bountiful Harvest Legacy perk raises their yield by 20% per rank, so if you plan to live off sales, take it early.

Frilled LichenFrom skill 15

According to Wowhead, it drops when gathering four herbs: Earthroot, Mageroyal, Briarthorn and Bruiseweed. Earthroot gives it most often, about once per 250 picks, and the other three even less often. Two lichens make one Cerulean Dye, and 131 recipes call for that dye, mostly tailoring bags. On the beta the dye went for about 3 gold, but that was under a level-30 cap. Enchanters need the lichen itself too: Enchant Weapon - Insight takes 4.

RosecapSource unknown yet

Wowhead lists it among the herbalist's scarce materials but doesn't yet know which herbs drop it. Two Rosecaps make one Magenta Dye, and 65 recipes call for that dye, mostly tailoring, including runecloth bags. Enchant Necklace - Healing Power also needs 4 Rosecaps.

StranglevineSource unknown yet

Another herbalist's scarce material with no known source. Two Stranglevines make one Viridian Dye: alchemists make it from skill 215 at a Fermenter. Only 16 recipes call for this dye, but many need a lot of it: the Mooncloth Bag, Bottomless Bag and Robe of the Archmage take 8-10 each. And the new two-handed weapon enchants need 4 Stranglevine.

For the December 9 raids: lotuses and flask herbs

Three raids open on December 9: the 10-player Barrow Deeps, the 20-player Hyjal Summit, and the 40-player Onyxia's Lair. Raiders buy flasks and elixirs every week, and almost every one of those recipes calls for expensive level 60 herbs. That's the steadiest demand an herbalist will have at 60.

Black LotusFrom skill 300

Grows in Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands, Silithus and Winterspring. Every Classic flask needs one Black Lotus: Flask of the Titans, Flask of Distilled Wisdom, Flask of Supreme Power and the rest. The Alchemist's Stone takes another 4, and the Satchel of Cenarius for tailors takes one.

DreamfoilFrom skill 270

The main raid herb: 30 go into each Flask of Distilled Wisdom and Flask of Supreme Power, 3 into Major Mana Potion and Greater Arcane Elixir, and one into Greater Fire Protection Potion. Blizzard says outright that you'll need fire protection for Onyxia, so that potion will be in demand from the very first run.

GromsbloodFrom skill 250

Thirty go into each Flask of the Titans, which adds 1200 health for 2 hours. Another three go into Elixir of the Grizzly, a new elixir whose recipe is sold for Merchant's Favor.

Mountain Silversage and IcecapFrom skill 280 and 290

You need 10 for each Flask of Supreme Power and Flask of Distilled Wisdom: Mountain Silversage for the first, Icecap for the second. Elixir of the Mongoose takes another 2 Mountain Silversage, and Major Mana Potion 2 Icecap. Note that Icecap grows only in Winterspring.

Golden SansamFrom skill 260

First Aid uses it for Major Healing Potion: 1050-1750 health, the kind people drink in raids. The Manual: Major Healing Potion is sold by the rare demon Pexmit on Mount Hyjal, so at first not everyone will have the recipe. Flask of Natural Accuracy takes another 9 Golden Sansam.

Death LotusSkill and location unknown

A new Forever herb for the nature flasks: Flask of Natural Accuracy, Flask of Natural Aggression, Flask of Natural Precision and Flask of Natural Swiftness. Each needs one Death Lotus, 12-18 of a second herb (Demonsage or Marefoil) and 6-9 of one of the old herbs, and the bonus only works on Mount Hyjal, in Barrow Deeps and in Hyjal Summit - two of the three raids. Engineers, blacksmiths and enchanters have five more recipes with Death Lotus.

Where to train Herbalism and its ranks

In Forever you can get Apprentice right in your starting valley, where the Junior Herbalism Trainers only teach the first rank, for 10 copper. You can skip them too, because one of the first quests, at about level 3-4, lets you pick the Wild Harvest book. The other ranks are taught by regular Herbalism trainers in capitals and towns, plus two trainers on Zephras Isle. All four ranks together cost 5 gold 55 silver 10 copper.

The character levels for Expert and Artisan come from Icy Veins' table. Neither the client nor Wowhead shows them, so we'll check them at launch.

Which herbs to pick at which skill

Each herb has two thresholds that matter for leveling. At the first you can start picking it, and at the second it goes gray and stops giving skill. In between, the herb goes from orange to yellow to green. The thresholds and zones below come from Wowhead's Forever herbalism overview, and Wowhead marks all these nodes as unchanged from Classic. The main zones are listed, and if an herb doesn't grow out in the open, the parentheses say where to look.

Incense Candle, Greenhouse, and Seed Hybridizer

Camping is a new Forever system. At a campfire, each player can put down one item from their profession, and it gives a bonus to everyone who sits or works nearby for at least a minute. All camp items share a 1-hour cooldown. Herbalists can place them thanks to Gardening, an ability that comes with the profession.

The Incense Candle unlocks at skill 20. The trainer sells its recipe for 1 silver, and the Camping 101: Herbalism quest from the camping chain teaches it too. The candle takes one Peacebloom and one Silverleaf, so it costs next to nothing. Blizzard says it gives everyone at the campfire 2 to 25 Intellect depending on level. That's the same bonus as the mage's Arcane Intellect, and the two don't stack.

The Greenhouse unlocks at skill 140 and replaces the candle. It keeps the candle's bonus and also lets you plant seeds and grow herbs. Shadetooth in the Excavation Site: Wetlands dungeon drops Blueprint: Greenhouse about 8% of the time, according to Wowhead. Note that the greenhouse itself needs Arthas' Tears and Purple Lotus, which you can only pick yourself at skill 220 and 210, so at 140 you'll have to buy them.

The Seed Hybridizer is a skill 300 item, with the candle's bonus plus the option to multiply seeds or combine them into seeds of higher rarity. Nobody knows yet where to get the Blueprint: Seed Hybridizer.

Seeds drop while you gather herbs, and a player on Wowhead says commonplace seeds show up as early as Peacebloom and Earthroot. There are four kinds in total, from commonplace to scarce. You plant one seed in the greenhouse and combine two identical ones in the hybridizer. What grows from seeds and how many herbs you get out of it, we'll only find out after launch.

Gloves, enchants, and tea for Herbalism skill

Herbalism skill bonuses stack, and Wowhead says all of them together let you pick herbs up to 25 points above your skill. They don't give skill points, but they let you move to a higher-level zone sooner. You can only wear one pair of gloves, so the max is your best gloves, an enchant on them, and tea.

Find Herbs comes with the profession and shows herbs on the minimap. Tauren also get help from Cultivation. In Forever it grows a copy of the plant nearby that anyone can pick, even without Herbalism, but only one copy per node. According to Icy Veins, after bots on the beta started copying Black Lotus this way, Cultivation got a level requirement equal to the herb's skill divided by 5, so Black Lotus needs level 60. The cooldown is 1 hour.

Enchant Gloves - Herbalism+2Glove enchant, formula drops from mobs; needs Kingsblood

Common mistakes

  • Vendoring lichen. A vendor pays 30 copper for Frilled Lichen, and two lichens make a dye that sold for about 3 gold on the beta. Don't rush to sell Swiftthistle either, because alchemists need it. And nobody knows yet what grows from seeds, so hang on to those too.
  • Picking gray herbs. A gray herb gives no skill at all, and a green one gives it a lot less often than a yellow one. Once a zone's main herbs turn green, move on using the leveling plan.
  • Forgetting to train the next rank. At 75, 150, and 225 your skill hits a cap. Journeyman is taught from skill 50, Expert from 125, and Artisan from 200, and according to Icy Veins the last two also need character level 10 and 25.
  • Putting the candle down next to a mage. The Incense Candle and Arcane Intellect give the same bonus and don't stack. If a mage has already buffed the group with Intellect, the candle does nothing, so you're better off placing your second profession's camp item.
  • Forgetting the early herbs once you've leveled. Wowhead says Frilled Lichen only drops from Earthroot, Mageroyal, Briarthorn, and Bruiseweed. They won't give you skill anymore, but if the dye sells well, a run through the early zones at 60 might pay better than you'd think.

Frequently asked questions

How do you level Herbalism fast in WoW Forever?

Pick herbs while they're orange or yellow, and move on in time. Any starting zone does the job up to 70, then Darkshore, Loch Modan, Silverpine Forest, or the Barrens up to 115, Hillsbrad Foothills, Wetlands, and Stonetalon Mountains up to 170, Stranglethorn Vale and Arathi Highlands up to 205, and Alterac Mountains, Tanaris, and Searing Gorge up to 230. After that come Feralas, The Hinterlands, Un'Goro Crater, Felwood, the Plaguelands, and Winterspring. Train your ranks at skill 50, 125, and 200.

Where do you learn Herbalism in WoW Forever?

Starting valleys have Junior Herbalism Trainers who teach the first rank for 10 copper. You can also pick the Wild Harvest book from one of the first quests, at about level 3-4, and it teaches the profession right away if you have fewer than two primary professions. The next ranks come from regular Herbalism trainers in capitals, towns, and on Zephras Isle.

How much does it cost to level Herbalism to 300?

Just training: 10 copper for Apprentice, 5 silver for Journeyman, 50 silver for Expert, and 5 gold for Artisan, which is 5 gold 55 silver 10 copper in total. Herbalists don't need a tool. According to Icy Veins, Expert is taught from character level 10 and Artisan from 25.

Where does Black Lotus grow in WoW Forever?

In Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands, Silithus, and Winterspring, and you can only pick it at skill 300. Every Classic flask needs a Black Lotus, the Flask of the Titans included. On the beta, the Black Market vendor in Riverglades sold it for 50 gold, so nobody's likely to pay more on the Auction House.

Where do you get Frilled Lichen?

It drops as a bonus from Earthroot, Mageroyal, Briarthorn, and Bruiseweed, the herbs from skill 15 to 100. Wowhead says Earthroot drops it most often, about once per 250 picks. Alchemists make Cerulean Dye from two lichens, and 131 recipes call for that dye, mostly tailoring bags.

What does the herbalist's Greenhouse do in WoW Forever?

You put the Greenhouse down at a campfire from skill 140, in place of the Incense Candle. It keeps the candle's Intellect bonus and lets you plant the herb seeds you find while gathering. The Greenhouse blueprint drops from Shadetooth in the Excavation Site: Wetlands dungeon. What exactly grows from seeds, we'll only find out after launch.

Which profession goes best with Herbalism?

Most often it's Mining, since you gather herbs and ore along the same path. The minimap can only track one at a time, though, so you'll have to switch. If you want to craft to sell, take Alchemy. Almost all its recipes are made from herbs, and your own herbs make leveling a lot cheaper.
