How to play with friends in WoW Forever

Updated13 October 2026 · 9 min read · based on beta 1.60.1 and official news

To play together in WoW Forever, you and your friends need the same region, the same ruleset (Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying), and the same faction. Realms are gone, and Horde and Alliance cannot form groups together. Agree on everything before the November 4, 2026 launch: transfers between rulesets will not be available at launch. From there, it is much like Classic, with layering and taking turns over quest drops to keep in mind.

How to join the same world as your friends

Three things must match: region, ruleset, and faction. Forever has no realms: each ruleset within a region is one large shared world.

  • Region. Europe, the Americas, and Asia are separate. Everyone shares one server during the beta, but Europe will have its own megaservers at launch. Your American friend from the beta will not be in your world.
  • Ruleset. Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying; Hardcore will be added after launch. Groups, dungeons, and raids are restricted to the same ruleset.
  • Faction. Horde and Alliance cannot group together on any ruleset.

Which ruleset should your group choose: Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying?

If anyone in your group dislikes being ambushed on the road, choose Normal: PvP is opt-in, and you flag yourself with /pvp.

Battlegrounds match players across rulesets, except Hardcore. However, you probably will not be able to queue together across rulesets: that requires a group, and cross-ruleset groups are not allowed.

RulesetWorld PvPFactions on one accountWho it suits
NormalOptional, using /pvpBothGroups with mixed preferences and players who want to level peacefully
PvPAutomatically flagged in contested and hostile zonesOnly onePlayers prepared for ambushes and happy to set their own
RoleplayingSame as NormalBothPlayers who enjoy roleplaying their characters
HardcoreDetails are not available yetBothComing after launch. Groups only with other Hardcore players; no battlegrounds

Can Horde and Alliance friends play together?

No. Factions are separate on every ruleset: Blizzard explicitly says this preserves the war in Warcraft. On the PvP ruleset, an account can have characters from only one faction. Create an Alliance character there and you cannot create Horde characters, or vice versa.

Skyborne are not neutral: Windshapers belong to the Horde, while the High Order belongs to the Alliance, so choose your friends' side. Skyborne also start separately on the island of Zephris until roughly level 12, reaching the mainland later. For other races, Classic veterans recommend finishing your own starting zone and meeting around levels 10–12 in a shared zone: the Barrens for Horde, Loch Modan for Alliance. Leave earlier and you will miss Forever's new starting quests.

How to find your friends and stay on the same layer

Ask for their full name. Forever characters have two-part names: only the combination is unique, while hundreds of players can share a first name. Blizzard even suggests that a group of friends use the same second name, like a family surname. Early name reservations run from October 27 to November 3, 2026 for owners of an eligible pack, on a first-come, first-served basis. For the rest of your preparations, see what to do before launch.

Layering is the main complication: forming a group can move you to another copy of the world, making the enemy you were fighting disappear. This still happens in the beta, so:

  • Invite each other while nearby and out of combat. Testers report inviting someone near a cave boss only to have every cleared enemy reappear.
  • The leader keeps their layer. Since October 1 on the beta, forming a group no longer moves the leader; the other players move to them.
  • Watch the timer. Before a layer change, the game warns you and shows a countdown with a button to move immediately.
  • Stick with your group. The game remembers previous party members, highlights their names in light blue, and tries to place you on the same layer. It does the same for guildmates.

Duo leveling: sharing XP and quest drops

A duo gains speed through faster kills, rather than extra XP. It most likely works as in Classic: two-player groups get no bonus, kill XP is split in half, and the group bonus starts at three players. Quest XP is unaffected by group size.

Try not to outlevel your friend. Green enemies in Forever give 4–20% less XP than in Classic, and there is no level scaling to help a friend catch up.

WhatHow it works in a group
Kill XPXP reductions for lower-level enemies are calculated separately for each player, following the October 8 fix. If anyone greatly outlevels the enemy, nobody receives kill XP
Quest dropsDrops take turns: once you get yours, the next goes to your friend. Everyone needs their own set, so a duo needs twice as many drops
Objects on the groundEach player must interact with and collect them separately
Sharing questsRegular quests can be shared as in Classic. A quest that starts from an item or gives you an item when accepted cannot be shared
DungeonsThere is only a bulletin board: meeting stones open it but do not transport you, and there are no summoning stones. Most XP comes from quests, so collect them in advance

Which classes work best for duo leveling?

Any pair can work, but a duo with healing has a smoother time and finds dungeon groups more easily: tanks and healers are always in demand. These pairs have proved useful in Classic Hardcore:

  • Warrior + Paladin. Healing reduces the Warrior's downtime and keeps them fighting to generate Rage; the Warrior supplies the killing speed.
  • Warrior + Shaman. Chain Heal plus Windfury Totem.
  • Rogue + Druid. Both can sneak past unnecessary enemies, while the Druid heals instead of taking long food breaks. Learn more on the Rogue class page.
  • Warlock + Mage. They can gather packs of enemies, with the Voidwalker and Fear helping control anything that gets away.

Inviting a friend to WoW Forever: invitation codes

Forever is included in a regular WoW subscription; it does not require a separate purchase. If a friend is unsure, give them an Invite-A-Friend code: the Skyborne Heroic Pack includes 1 code, while the Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection each include 3. Codes will arrive by email starting October 20, 2026, and an eligible friend can play without a subscription from November 4 to 11. The codes do not grant beta access, gift purchases do not include them, and Blizzard has not announced a Recruit-A-Friend XP bonus for Forever.

Did your friend join after you had already leveled ahead? Make a new character to play alongside them. Legacy Points are shared across the account on Normal, PvP, and Roleplaying, and perks such as Well Rested and Talented speed up a second character. The Legacy window usually unlocks when your first character reaches level 25.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play on the same server as a friend in WoW Forever?

Forever replaces realms with rulesets. Choose the same region, ruleset, and faction as your friend, and you will share a world. If you end up on different layers, form a group while standing near each other.

Can I transfer a character to a friend's ruleset?

Not at launch; you will need to create a new character. The one exception is a dead Hardcore character, which can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP.

Can friends in Europe and the Americas play together?

No. Each region has its own megaservers. Everyone shares one server in the beta, so this may surprise players at launch.

Why did my friend disappear after a group invitation?

You ended up on different world layers. When a group forms, the invited player moves to the leader's layer. Invite your friend while nearby and out of combat, rather than inside a cave next to a boss.

Is XP split in a two-player group?

Most likely, as in Classic: kill XP is split in half, and the group bonus starts at three players. Quest XP is not split, so a duo benefits from faster kills.

Does WoW Forever have Recruit-A-Friend?

Not yet. Packs include Invite-A-Friend codes that let an eligible friend play without a subscription from November 4 to 11, 2026. Blizzard has not announced bonus XP or the ability to summon each other.
